Civic's Story

John Drebinger III is the Principal Consultant of Civic Consulting Partners, a public systems strategy firm advising government agencies, philanthropies, technology companies, and mission-driven organizations operating in complex policy environments.

John began his career in technology and media, leading storytelling and communications efforts that supported the adoption of emerging, cutting-edge solutions.

His work took him around the world on attention-grabbing projects ranging from sending Bitcoin to space in the United Kingdom to working with Anderson Cooper and the 60 Minutes team on a feature about a sustainable geothermal-powered data center in Iceland. Along the way, he also supported government technology companies in demonstrating how innovative solutions could strengthen public systems and improve outcomes for both the workers who operate them and the community members they serve.

This experience provided a front-row view into how innovation succeeds or stalls based on the systems, incentives, and narratives surrounding it. It ultimately led John to focus on human-centered design, public policy, government affairs, and strategic consulting aimed at addressing the practical challenges that shape outcomes in public and social sector systems.

He has since worked across policy, implementation, and cross-sector partnership development, helping organizations align stakeholders, navigate institutional complexity, and translate strategy into durable execution.

In 2020, John launched Civic Consulting Partners after seeing firsthand the need for advisors who understand both public systems and private sector solutions, and who can help ensure partnerships lead to measurable and sustained change. The firm has supported clients across California and nationally and regularly collaborates with a network of trusted subcontractors and subject-matter experts based on each engagement’s needs.
